Lets jump in shall we!

What You will need:

  • Jaclyn M Tui Free Cushion cover Pattern - Available here

  • Paper scissors

  • Fabric scissors

  • Cello-tape

  • Tailors chalk

  • Pins

  • Tape Measure

  • 1 x 40cm invisible zipper

  • Half a meter of fabric - 50cm (can be 120cm or 150cm wide)

  • 45cm cushion inner or cushion stuffing

Step 1:

Print off PDF pattern, there should be 6 pieces.

Step 2:

Match the triangles, they should overlap each other. Do this for all 6 pieces.

Tape them together. The finished measurement of the pattern square should be approximately 48cm.

Using paper scissors cut pattern out.

Step 3:

We need to cut 2 pieces of fabric for the pattern, You can cut two pieces separately or fold the fabric over to cut both layers together.

  • Lay pattern on fabric, taking care to follow the grain-lines, both grain-line of fabric and pattern should be going in the same direction.

  • Cut fabric out around pattern shape, try not to cut the paper as this will make your fabric scissors blunt.

Zipper placement

Step 4:

You will need:

  • Invisible zipper foot

  • Standard zipper foot

  • 40cm invisible Zipper

Chalk the top of your fabric pieces so you know which is the top of the cushion and the bottom.

Over-lock or zigzag stitch along the tops. This is to stop the fabric fraying under your zipper.

On your pattern you will see markings for a zipper placement. Chalk mark the two hexagon marks.

Your zipper will start and finish at these two markings.

Step 5:

Take your zipper and lay it right side up on your fabric. Chalk mark your zipper to match the zipper placement marks on the fabric. Turn zipper over and do the same markings on the underside.

  • Unzip your zipper- place right side of the zipper to right side of the fabric, running along the overlocked/zigzaged edge.

  • Match your chalk markings together. Your zipper markings should match your fabric markings.

  • Pin in place, or if you prefer hand sew/tack it in place.

  • Using your invisible zipper foot, start at the top of the zipper, carefully sewing your way down the zipper to the next chalk marking.

  • Make sure you turn/press the zipper teeth out a little so the stitching gets as close as possible.

Step 6:

Do the same process on the other side making sure right sides of the zipper and fabric are facing each other. This step may feel a little awkward and seem like you are twisting the zipper.

Step 7:

Do the Zipper up. It may be a little difficult to start, but once you have it turned in the right way it will move freely.

Step 8:

There will be a un-sewn section at each end of the zipper.

  • Change to your zipper foot.

  • The next step is to sew up the ends.

  • Pin your ends together so the side seams match up.

  • Take note of where the stitch line ends from where the zipper has been sewn in.

  • This will be your starting point. Using your zipper foot, get as close as you can to the stitch line. Back tack/stitch generously and sew towards the outer edge. Making sure to also generously back tack/stitch.

  • You may need to unzip the zipper a little to comfortably sew past the the zipper slider.

  • Once done, it should look like there is no difference between the seam and the zipper. It should be one clean line with no bumps or snags. Iron the ends flat.

Step 9:

The hardest part is now done and we are onto finishing your cushion.

  • Test your zipper to make sure it runs smooth.

  • Leave the zipper half unzipped. It has to be big enough to put your hand through so the cushion can be easily turned in the right way at the end.

Step 10:

Go back to the pdf pattern and take note of the notches marked A, B, C, D, E, F.

  • Chalk mark these onto both pieces of your fabric, (now held together with a zipper) can also pin as per pictures on journal entry.

  • Place right sides of fabric together matching notches together, A to A, B to B and so on.

  • Chalk marks should match and you should now start to see your cushion forming.

  • Pin sides and bottom together.

Step 11: - Finishing

  • Up by the zipper ends, fold the fabric up so its sitting flat. See pictures on journal entry.

  • Sew a 1.5cm seam all the way around the three sides of your square.

  • Stop 1.5cm from corners, lift presser foot and turn fabric while keeping the needle in the fabric. This will set you up to do the next seam without having to stop and start each seam.

  • Back tack/sew your ends off securely.

  • The last step is to over-lock or zigzag all the way around the outer edge. If zigzagging the edge check to make sure all the edges match up nicely, any edges that don't match evenly trim them so they're even, then sew.

  • Trim off all your loose ends, turn in the right way, give it a press and you've finished your cushion outer.

Step 12:

Insert your cushion inner, or stuff it with cushion stuffing and we are finished.

Well done, you’ve now made your first Jaclyn M Tui cushion! Now you have made one, you’ll find repeating the process a whole lot easier. Happy sewing! and feel free to tag me on Instagram or Facebook, I would love to see your finished creations.
